The First Book of Samuel 17 · Geʽez & English

  1. Verse 1.

    ወአስተጋብኡ ፡ ሰብእ ፡ ፈልስጥኤም ፡ ተአይኒዎሙ ፡ ለፀብእ ፡ ወተጋብእ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ሶኮት ፡ ዘይሁዳ ፡ ወተዓየኑ ፡ ማእከለ ፡ ሶኮት ፡ ወማእከለ ፡ ዓዜቃ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ስፍድም ።

    And the Philistines gathered their armies for battle, and they assembled at Socoh of Judah, and they encamped between Socoh and Azekah, at [Ephes-dammim].

  2. Verse 2.

    ወተጋብእ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ወስብእ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ውስተ ፡ ቄላት ፡ ኤላ ፡ ከመ ፡ ይግበሩ ፡ ፀብእ ፡ ምስለ ፡ ፈልስጥኤም ።

    And Saul and the men of Israel assembled at the [Valley] of Elah, to make battle against the Philistines.

  3. Verse 3.

    ወፈልስጥኤም ፡ ቆሙ ፡ እምለፈ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ይብር ፡ ወእስራኤል ፡ ተዓየኑ ፡ እምለፈ ፡ በውስተ ፡ ይብር ፡ ወማእከሌሆሙ ፡ ጋይ ።

    And the Philistines stood on the one side on the mountain, and Israel encamped on the other side on the mountain, and the valley [ravine] was between them.

  4. Verse 4.

    ወወፅአ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ኃያል ፡ እምትእይንተ ፡ ፈልስጥኤም ፡ ስሙ ፡ ኃልያድ ፡ እምኔጌት ፡ ወኑኁ ፡ ስድስተ ፡ እመት ፡ ወስብኁ ።

    And a mighty man came out from the camp of the Philistines, his name Goliath, from Gath; and his height was six cubits and a span.

  5. Verse 5.

    ወጌራ ፡ ዘብርት ፡ ውስተ ፡ ርእሱ ፡ ወልብሰ ፡ ድልወት ፡ ይለብስ ።

    And [a helmet] of bronze was on his head, and he wore a coat of mail.

  6. Verse 6.

    ወድርዓን ፡ ሐዲን ፡ ዘውስተ ፡ እገሪሁ ፡ ወውስተ ፡ አዕማዱ ፡ ወይተ ፡ ብርት ፡ ማእከለ ፡ መታክፍቲሁ ።

    And bronze greaves [were] on his legs, and on his shoulders [a] bronze [javelin] between his shoulder-blades.

  7. Verse 7.

    ወልሳነ ፡ ኩናቱ ፡ ከመ ፡ እስት ፡ ይብርቅ ፡ ወዘይጸውር ፡ ንዋየ ፡ ሐትሁ ።

    And the shaft of his spear was like a [weaver's beam] flashing, and the one who bore his armor [went] before him.

  8. Verse 8.

    ወቆመ ፡ ወጸርሐ ፡ ናብተ ፡ ይቤሎሙ ፡ ለምንት ፡ ወፃእክሙ ፡ ቃተል ፡ ምስሌነ ፡ እኮኑ ፡ አነ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወአንትሙ ፡ አግብርቲሁ ፡ ለሳአል ፡ ኅረዩ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ እምውስቴትክሙ ።

    And he stood and cried out [and] said to them, 'Why have you come out to make battle with us? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose for yourselves a man from among you.

  9. Verse 9.

    ወለእመ ፡ ክህለ ፡ ተቃትሎ ፡ ምስሌየ ፡ ወቀተለኒ ፡ ንከውን ፡ ለክሙ ፡ አግብርተ ፡ ወእመ ፡ አነ ፡ ክህልክዎ ፡ ወቀተልክዎ ፡ ትከውኑ ፡ ለነ ፡ አግብርተ ።

    And if he is able to fight with me and kills me, we will be servants to you; but if I prevail against him and kill him, you will be servants to us.'

  10. Verse 10.

    ወይቤሎሙ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ አነ ፡ እትዓየር ፡ ክዎሙ ፡ ለትዕይንተ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ በዛቲ ፡ ዕለት ፡ እንዘ ፡ እብል ፡ ሀቡኒ ፡ ብእሴ ፡ ወንትቃተል ፡ ክልኤነ ።

    And that Philistine said to them, 'I defy the camp of Israel this day, saying, Give me a man, and let us fight, the two of us.'

  11. Verse 11.

    ወሰምዓ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ወኩሉ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ዘንተ ፡ ነገረ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወየንገሮሙ ፡ ወደንገፁ ፡ ወፈርሁ ፡ ጥቀ ።

    And Saul and all Israel heard this word of the Philistine, [as] he spoke to them, and they were dismayed and feared greatly.

  12. Verse 12.

    ወዳዊት ፡ ወልደ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ አምጌት ፡ ልሕ ፡ አቡሁ ፡ እሴይ ፡ ወሎቱ ፡ ፰ ፡ ደቂቅ ፡ ወውእቱ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ እሴይ ፡ በመዋዕሊሁ ፡ ለሳአል ፡ ልህቀ ፡ ወዐበየ ፡ ማእከለ ፡ ዕደው ።

    And David was the son of a man from [Geth — so the Ge'ez; corrupt, cf. an Ephrathite of Bethlehem] — his father was Jesse, and he had eight sons; and that man Jesse, in the days of Saul, was old and advanced [in years] among men.

  13. Verse 13.

    ወሖሩ ፡ ዳዊቀ ፡ እሴይ ፡ እለ ፡ የዓብዩ ፡ ሐሩ ፡ ምስለ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ለተፃብእ ፡ ወእስሙ ፡ እለ ፡ ሐሩ ፡ ለፀብእ ፡ ኤልያብ ፡ ወአሚናዳብ ፡ ወሣልሱ ፡ ሴ ።

    And the [elder] sons of Jesse went, those who were grown; they went with Saul to the battle; and the names of those who went to the battle [were] Eliab and Aminadab, and the third, [Se— so the Ge'ez; the name is truncated/corrupt, cf. Shammah].

  14. Verse 14.

    ውእቱ ፡ ወዓቢያን ፡ እለ ፡ ሖሩ ፡ ድኃረ ፡ ሳአል ።

    And he [David — the youngest, by implication]; and the elder ones went after Saul.

  15. Verse 15.

    ወዳዊትስ ፡ ተመይጠ ፡ ወሐረ ፡ እምኀበ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ከመ ፡ ይርዓይ ፡ አባግዓ ፡ አቡሁ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ቤተልሔም ።

    But David turned back and went away from Saul, to shepherd his father's sheep in Bethlehem.

  16. Verse 16.

    ወይብል ይድ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወይመጽእ ፡ ጽባሐ ፡ ወሰርከ ፡ ወይቀውም ፡ ውስተ ፡ ተዓይኒሆሙ ፡ ለእስራኤል ፡ በቃለ ፡ ትዕይርት ።

    And the Philistine [drew near], and would come morning and evening, and would stand before the camp of Israel with a word of defiance [reproach].

  17. Verse 17.

    ወይቤ ፡ እሴይ ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ወልድየ ፡ ንሣእ ፡ ለአኃዊከ ፡ ፰ ፡ መስፈርተ ፡ ቆሊ ፡ ወዘንተ ፡ ፲ ፡ ኅብስተ ፡ ወሩጽ ፡ ናብ ፡ ኀበ ፡ አኃዊከ ።

    And Jesse said to David his son, 'Take for your brothers eight measures [an ephah] of parched grain, and these ten loaves, and run [carry them] to your brothers.

  18. Verse 18.

    ወዘንተ ፡ ፲ ፡ ሐሊበ ፡ ናብ ፡ ለመልአከ ፡ ኄንንት ፡ ወለአኃዊከ ፡ ትሬኢ ፡ በሰላም ፡ ወንዋየ ፡ ሆሎብ ፡ ትመየጥ ።

    And these ten [cheeses / portions of] milk carry to the commander of the thousand; and you shall see your brothers [whether they are] in peace, and bring back their [pledge / news].'

  19. Verse 19.

    ወሳአል ፡ ወኩሉ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ተዓየኑ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ኤላ ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይፃብእ ፡ ምስለ ፡ ፈልስጥኤም ።

    And Saul and all Israel were encamped in [the Valley of] Elah, while they fought with the Philistines.

  20. Verse 20.

    ወጌሠ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ በጽባሕ ፡ ወኅደገ ፡ አባግዒሁ ፡ ንበ ፡ ካልእ ፡ ኖላዊ ፡ ወነሥአ ፡ ወሐረ ፡ በከመ ፡ አዘዞ ፡ አቡሁ ፡ እሴይ ፡ ወቦአ ፡ ማእከለ ፡ ገብኃልያድ ፡ ወፃእ ፡ ወየበቡ ፡ በውስተ ፡ ዐብእ ።

    And David rose early in the morning, and left the sheep with [another] keeper, and took [the things] and went as his father Jesse had commanded him; and he came to [the place of the encampment], and went out [to the battle-line], and they raised the war-cry in the battle.

  21. Verse 21.

    ወተአየነ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ወፈልስጥኤም ፡ ምስተ ፡ ዓየኑ ፡ ቅድሜ ፡ ትዕይንተ ።

    And Israel and the Philistines drew up [in line], camp facing camp, before the [battle-array].

  22. Verse 22.

    ወእንበት ፡ ንዋየ ፡ ኀበ ፡ ዓቃሲ ፡ ወሮጸ ፡ ኀበ ፡ ትዕይንት ፡ ወተስእለ ፡ ሰላመ ፡ አኃዊሁ ።

    And David left the [provisions / baggage] with the keeper, and ran to the battle-line, and asked his brothers [after their] welfare.

  23. Verse 23.

    ወእንዘ ፡ ይትናሰሎሙ ፡ ወናሁ ፡ ኃልያድ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ስሙ ፡ እምትዕይንተ ፡ ፈልስጥኤም ፡ ወእንዘ ፡ ይትታስ ፡ ትዕይርት ፡ ላዕለ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ወስምዓ ፡ ዳዊት ።

    And while he was speaking with them, behold, Goliath the Philistine — his name — [came up] from the camp of the Philistines, and as he was uttering [the defiance] against Israel, David heard.

  24. Verse 24.

    ወኩሉ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ እምስብእ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ሶበ ፡ ርእይዎ ፡ ለዘንተ ፡ ብእሴ ፡ ይጐይዩ ፡ እምቅድሜ ፡ ገሩ ፡ ወፈርሁ ፡ ጥቀ ።

    And every man of the men of Israel, when they saw this man, fled before him [lit. before his face], and feared greatly.

  25. Verse 25.

    ወይቤሉ ፡ ስብእ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ትሬእዩኑ ፡ ለዘንተ ፡ ብእሴ ፡ የዓርግ ፡ ከመ ፡ ይዕእሎ ፡ ለእስራኤል ፡ ወብእሲ ፡ ዘቀተሎ ፡ ለዝንቱ ፡ ኃዮ ፡ ንጉሥ ፡ ብዕለ ፡ ዓቢየ ፡ ወዓዲ ፡ ይሁቦ ፡ ወለቶ ፡ ከመ ፡ ትኩኖ ፡ ብእሲተ ፡ ወቤቶ ፡ ይኩን ፡ ግዱፈ ፡ በእስራኤል ።

    And the men of Israel said, 'Have you seen this man who comes up to defy Israel? And the man who kills this [one], the king will [enrich him] with great riches, and moreover he will give him his daughter [to be] his wife, and his house will be [made free / exempt] in Israel.'

  26. Verse 26.

    ወይቤ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ለዕደው ፡ እለ ፡ ይቀውሙ ፡ ምስሌሁ ፡ ወይቤሎሙ ፡ ምንተ ፡ ይገብር ፡ ለብእሲ ፡ ዘቀተሎ ፡ ለዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወሴስለ ፡ ፀእለት ፡ እምድቂቀ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ እስመ ፡ መኑ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ቄላፍ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ዘፀረፈ ፡ ትዕይንተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ሕያው ።

    And David said to the men who were standing with him, and said to them, 'What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes the reproach from the children of Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he has reproached the army of the living God?'

  27. Verse 27.

    ወይቤሉ ፡ ከመ ፡ ዘ ፡ ቅድመ ፡ ይገብር ፡ ሎቱ ፡ ለብእሲ ፡ ዘይቀትሎ ፡ ለዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ።

    And they said to him as before, '[Thus] it shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine.'

  28. Verse 28.

    ወሰምዓ ፡ ኤልያብ ፡ እኁሁ ፡ ዘየዓቢ ፡ ዘተናገሮሙ ፡ ለዕደው ፡ ወመዓ ፡ ኤልያብ ፡ ሳዕለ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወይቤ ፡ ኤልያብ ፡ ለምንት ፡ መጻእክ ፡ ዝየ ፡ ወኃደገ ፡ አባግዓ ፡ አሐተ ፡ ገዳም ፡ ናሁ ፡ እነ ፡ አእመርኩ ፡ ነገርከ ፡ ወእከየ ፡ ልብከ ፡ ወናሁ ፡ ትፈቅድ ፡ ከመ ፡ ትሬድ ።

    And Eliab his elder brother heard him as he spoke to the men, and Eliab was angry at David, and Eliab said, 'Why have you come down here, and with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? Behold, I know your insolence and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.'

  29. Verse 29.

    ወትትቃተል ፡ ወይቤ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ምንተ ፡ ዘትመዓዓኒ ፡ ዘንተ ፡ ነገር ።

    And David said, 'What have I now done? It was only a word.'

  30. Verse 30.

    ወሐረ ፡ እምኔሁ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ካልእ ፡ መካን ፡ ወይቤ ፡ ዘንተ ፡ ነገረ ፡ ወተሥጥውዎ ፡ ሕዝብ ፡ ሎቱ ፡ ነገረ ፡ ከመ ፡ ቀዳሚ ።

    And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke the same word, and the people answered him a word as before.

  31. Verse 31.

    ወስምዑ ፡ ዘንተ ፡ ነገረ ፡ በከመ ፡ ይቤ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወዜነውዎ ፡ ለሳአል ፡ ወወስድዎ ።

    And [when] they heard the words that David spoke, they reported them to Saul, and they brought him [before Saul].

  32. Verse 32.

    ወይቤሎ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ለሳአል ፡ ኢይድቅ ፡ ልቡ ፡ ለእግዚእየ ፡ ገብርከ ፡ የሐውር ፡ ንበሁ ፡ ወይትቃተል ፡ ምስሌሁ ።

    And David said to Saul, 'Let no man's heart fail on account of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.'

  33. Verse 33.

    ለዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወይቤሎ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ኢትክል ፡ ሐዊረ ፡ ንበ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ከመ ፡ ትትቃተል ፡ ምስሌሁ ፡ እስመ ፡ ሕፃን ፡ አንተ ፡ ወእቱኒ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ መስተቃትል ፡ እምንእሱ ።

    And Saul said to David, 'You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are a youth, and he is a man of war from his youth.'

  34. Verse 34.

    ወይቤሎ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ለሳአል ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይሬኢ ፡ ገብርከ ፡ አባግዓ ፡ እቡሁ ፡ ውስተ ፡ መራዕይ ፡ ሶበ ፡ መጽእ ፡ አንበሳ ፡ ወእመኒ ፡ ድብ ፡ ይነሥእ ፡ በግዐ ፡ እምውስተ ፡ መራዕይ ።

    And David said to Saul, 'Your servant was shepherding his father's sheep in the pastures, and when a lion came, or even a bear, and took a sheep from the flock,

  35. Verse 35.

    እወፅእ ፡ ድኃሬሁ ፡ ወእደግኖ ፡ ወእቀትሎ ፡ ወእንግፍ ፡ እምውስተ ፡ አፉሁ ፡ ወእመኒ ፡ ተንሥአ ፡ ላዕሌየ ፡ እአዝ ፡ ጉርዔሁ ፡ ወእሐንቆ ፡ ወእቀትሎ ።

    I would go out after it and strike it down and kill it, and snatch [the sheep] out of its mouth; and if it rose up against me, I would seize its throat and strangle it and kill it.

  36. Verse 36.

    ወከማሁ ፡ እገብር ፡ እመሂ ፡ አንበሰ ፡ ወእመሂ ፡ ኮነ ፡ ድብ ፡ እቀትል ፡ አነ ፡ ገብርከ ፡ ዝንቱኒ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ቄላፍ ፡ ከማሁ ፡ ከመ ፡ ፩ ፡ እምኔሆሙ ፡ እምእለ ፡ ኢየሐውርኒ ፡ እንከ ፡ ወእቀትሎ ፡ እስመ ፡ ፀረፈ ፡ ተዓይነ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ሕያው ።

    And likewise will I do — whether it was a lion, or whether it was a bear, I, your servant, killed [it]; and this uncircumcised Philistine [will be] like one of them. For who [is he] that he should not [be dealt with] by me henceforth? And I will kill him, because he has reproached the army of the living God.'

  37. Verse 37.

    ወይቤ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ውእቱ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ዘአድኃነኒ ፡ እምእዴ ፡ አንበሳ ፡ ወእምነ ፡ እዴ ፡ ድብ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ያድኃነኒ ፡ እምነ ፡ እዴሁ ፡ ለዝንቱ ፡ ቄላፍ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወይቤሎ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ሐር ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ የህሉ ፡ ምስሌከ ።

    And David said, 'It is Yahweh who delivered me from the hand of the lion and from the hand of the bear; he will deliver me from the hand of this uncircumcised Philistine.' And Saul said to David, 'Go, may Yahweh be with you.'

  38. Verse 38.

    ወአልበሶ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ልብሶ ፡ ሐዲን ፡ ወጌራ ፡ ዘብርት ፡ ወደየ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ርእሱ ።

    And Saul clothed David with his coat of mail, and a bronze [helmet], and set [it] upon his head.

  39. Verse 39.

    ወአቅነቶ ፡ መልዕልተ ፡ ልብሱ ፡ ሰይፈ ፡ ወሶበ ፡ ስገረ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ምዕረ ፡ ወኮብለለ ፡ ከመ ፡ ወይቤሎ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ኃብ ፡ ለሳአል ፡ ኢይክል ፡ ሐዊረ ፡ በዝንቱ ፡ እስመ ፡ ኢኮኩ ፡ ልሙድ ፡ ወአሰሰሎ ፡ እምላዕሌሁ ።

    And he girded over his garment a sword; and when David walked once and [tried to move about], David said to [Saul, 'I am unable] to walk in these, for I am not accustomed [to them]'; and he took them off from upon himself.

  40. Verse 40.

    ወነሥአ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ቀስታመ ፡ በእዴሁ ፡ ወሐረየ ፡ ሎቱ ፡ አኃነ ፡ እምውስተ ፡ ፈላግ ፡ ወወደየ ፡ ውስተ ፡ መምጠቱ ፡ ከመ ፡ እንተ ፡ ሶበ ፡ ይሬኢ ፡ አባግዓ ፡ ወሞጸፈ ፡ ስተ ፡ እዴሁ ፡ ወሐረ ፡ ንበ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ።

    And David took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself [stones] from the brook, and put them in the [shepherd's pouch] which was his when he watched the sheep; and his sling was in his hand, and he went toward that Philistine man.

  41. Verse 41.

    ወሐረ ፡ ኃልያድ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወቀርበ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወዘይጸውር ፡ ንዋየ ፡ ሐቅሉ ፡ ቅድሜሁ ።

    And Goliath the Philistine came and drew near to David, and the one bearing his armor [went] before him.

  42. Verse 42.

    ወበርእየ ፡ ኃልያድ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ አስሐቀሮ ፡ እስመ ፡ ሕፃን ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ወቀይሕ ፡ ገጹ ፡ ወሠናይ ፡ አዕይንቲሁ ።

    And when Goliath the Philistine saw David, he despised him, because he was a youth, and ruddy was his face, and beautiful were his eyes.

  43. Verse 43.

    ወይቤሎ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ከመ ፡ ከልብኑ ፡ አነ ፡ ዘትመጽእ ፡ ላዕሌየ ፡ በበትር ፡ ወረገሞ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ በአምልክቲሁ ።

    And this Philistine said to David, 'Am I a dog, that you come against me with a staff?' And this Philistine cursed him by his gods.

  44. Verse 44.

    ወይቤሎ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ነዓ ፡ ኃቤየ ፡ ወእሁብ ፡ ሥጋከ ፡ ለአዕዋፈ ፡ ሰማይ ፡ ወለአራዊተ ፡ ምድር ።

    And this Philistine said to David, 'Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of heaven and to the beasts of the earth.'

  45. Verse 45.

    ወይቤሎ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ለፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ አንተሰ ፡ ትመጽእ ፡ ኃቤየ ፡ በሰይፍ ፡ ወበርምሕ ፡ ወበኩናት ፡ ወአንሰ ፡ እመጽእ ፡ ኃቤከ ፡ በስመ ፡ ለእግዚእ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ፀባእት ፡ ዘተዓየርክ ፡ እምላክ ፡ ትዕይንተ ፡ እስራኤል ።

    And David said to the Philistine, 'You come against me with sword and with spear and with javelin; but I come against you in the name of the Lord Yahweh of hosts, whom you have defied, the God of the army of Israel.

  46. Verse 46.

    ውእቱ ፡ ዮም ፡ የዕጾከ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ውስተ ፡ እዴየ ፡ ወእቀትለክ ፡ ወእመትር ፡ ርእስከ ፡ እምኔክ ፡ ወእሁብ ፡ በዪክ ፡ ወበድነ ፡ ትዕይንቶሙ ፡ ለፈልስጥኤማዊያን ፡ ዮም ፡ ለአዕዋፈ ፡ ሰማይ ፡ ወለአራዊተ ፡ ምድር ፡ ወየእምሩ ፡ እንክ ፡ ዘሉ ፡ አሕዛበ ፡ ምድር ፡ ከመ ፡ ሀሎ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ምስለ ፡ እስራኤል ።

    This day Yahweh will deliver you into my hand, and I will kill you and cut off your head from you, and I will give your [carcass] and the corpses of the camp of the Philistines this day to the birds of heaven and to the beasts of the earth; and all the [peoples] of the earth will know that there is a God with Israel.

  47. Verse 47.

    ወየእምሩ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ዘሉ ፡ ተዓይን ፡ ከመ ፡ አኮ ፡ በሰይፍ ፡ ወበኩናት ፡ ዘያድኅን ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ እስመ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ቀትል ፡ ወያገብእክ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ውስተ ፡ እዴነ ።

    And all this assembly will know that it is not by sword and by javelin that Yahweh saves, for the battle is Yahweh's, and Yahweh will give you into our hand.'

  48. Verse 48.

    ወተንሥአ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወሐረ ፡ ወቀርበ ፡ ቅድመ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወሮጸ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወአፍጠነ ፡ ከመ ፡ ይትቀበሎ ፡ ለፈልስጥኤማዊ ።

    And this Philistine arose and went and drew near before David; and David ran and hastened to meet the Philistine.

  49. Verse 49.

    ወደየ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ እዴሁ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ኬሊ ፡ ወነሥአ ፡ እምህየ ፡ አሐተ ፡ እብነ ፡ ወወፀር ፡ ወሄጸ ፡ ለዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ፈጾሙ ፡ ወውስተ ፡ ናላሁ ፡ ወወድቀ ፡ በገጹ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ምድር ።

    And David put his hand into the [bag] and took from there one stone, and slung it and struck this Philistine on his forehead and in his [skull]; and he fell on his face to the ground.

  50. Verse 50.

    ወጸንዓ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ በሞጸፍ ፡ ወበእብን ፡ ወስይፍ ፡ አልቦ ፡ ውስተ ፡ እዴሁ ።

    And David prevailed with a sling and with a stone; and there was no sword in his hand.

  51. Verse 51.

    ወርጸ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወወድቀ ፡ ላዕለ ፡ ውስተ ፡ እዴሁ ፡ ወርጸ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወበጽሐ ፡ ናበ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወነሥአ ፡ ስይፎ ፡ እምውስተ ፡ ገቦሁ ፡ ወመተረ ፡ ርእሶ ፡ ወሶበ ፡ ርእዩ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊያን ፡ ከመ ፡ ወድቀ ፡ ጽንዓሙ ፡ ጐዩ ።

    And David ran and [stood] over [him] [lit. fell upon, by his hand]; and David ran and reached this Philistine, and took his sword out of its sheath and cut off his head. And when the Philistines saw that their champion had fallen, they fled.

  52. Verse 52.

    ወተንሥኡ ፡ ሰብእ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ወይሁዳ ፡ ወየበቡ ፡ ወደነዎሙ ፡ ወተለውዎሙ ፡ ድኃሬሆሙ ፡ እስከ ፡ ፍናተ ፡ ጌት ፡ ወእስከ ፡ አንቀጸ ፡ አቃሮን ፡ ወወድቀ ፡ አብድንቲሆሙ ፡ ለፈልስጥኤማዊያን ፡ እስከ ፡ ፍናት ።

    And the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted and pursued them, and followed after them as far as the [entrance] of Gath and as far as the gate of Ekron; and the corpses of the Philistines fell as far as the [way to]

  53. Verse 53.

    ጌት ፡ ወእስከ ፡ አንቀጸ ፡ አቃሮን ፡ ወተመይጡ ፡ ስብእ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ እለ ፡ ዴገንዎሙ ፡ ለፈልስጥኤም ፡ ወኄዱ ፡ ተዓይኒሆሙ ።

    Gath and as far as the gate of Ekron. And the men of Israel returned, those who had pursued the Philistines, and they [plundered] their camps.

  54. Verse 54.

    ወነሥአ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ርእሶ ፡ ለፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወመስደ ፡ ኢየሩሳሌም ፡ ወንዋይስ ፡ እንበረ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ደብተራሁ ።

    And David took the head of the Philistine and brought [it to] Jerusalem; but the [armor] he placed in his tent.

  55. Verse 55.

    ወሶበ ፡ ርእዮ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይወፅእ ፡ ከመ ፡ ይትቃጾሎ ፡ ለኃልያድ ፡ ፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ይቤሎ ፡ ለአበኔር ፡ መልእክ ፡ ኃይሉ ፡ ወልደ ፡ መኑ ፡ ዝሕፃን ፡ ወይቤ ፡ አበኔር ፡ ሕየወተ ፡ ነፍስክ ፡ ኢያእመርኩ ፡ አንሰ ።

    And when Saul saw David going out to meet Goliath the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of his army, 'Whose son is this youth?' And Abner said, 'By the life of your soul, I do not know.'

  56. Verse 56.

    ወይቤሎ ፡ ንጉሥ ፡ ተስእል ፡ ስብእ ፡ ከመ ፡ ይንግሩ ፡ ክ ፡ ወልደ ፡ መኑ ፡ ውእቱ ።

    And the king said, 'Ask [around among] the men whose son he is.'

  57. Verse 57.

    ወሶበ ፡ ተመይጠ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ እምድኃሬ ፡ ቀተሎ ፡ ለፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ወነሥአ ፡ አበኔር ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ወአብኦ ፡ ቅድመ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ወርእሱ ፡ ለፈልስጥኤማዊ ፡ ውስተ ፡ እዴሁ ።

    And when David returned from striking down the Philistine, Abner took David and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

  58. Verse 58.

    ወይቤሎ ፡ ሳአል ፡ ለዳዊት ፡ ወልደ ፡ መኑ ፡ አንተ ፡ ሕፃን ፡ ወይቤ ፡ ዳዊት ፡ ወልደ ፡ ገብርከ ፡ እሴይ ፡ ቤተልሔማዊ ።

    And Saul said to him, 'Whose son are you, youth?' And David said, 'The son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.'
