  1. Verse 1.

    ወሀሎ፡፩ብእሲ፡እምነ፡አርማቴም፡ዘመሴቆ፡እምደብረ፡ኤፍሬም፡ዘስሙ፡ሕልቃና፡ወልደ፡ኢየራምያል፡ወልደ፡ኤሊ፡ወልደ፡ቴቁ፡ወልደ፡ፁፍ፡ኤፍሬታዊ።

    And there was one man from Ramathaim of [Mesoch / the watch], from the hill-country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah, son of Jerahmeel [Ge'ez Ierameyal], son of Eli, son of Tehu [Tequ], son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

  2. Verse 2.

    ወቦ፡ክልኤቲ፡አንስት፡ስማ፡ለአሐቲ፡ሐና፡ወስመ፡ካልእታ፡ፍናና፡ወዐቲ፡ለፍናና፡ውሉድ፡ለሐናስ፡አልባ፡ውሉድ።

    And he had two wives: the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but as for Hannah, she had no children.

  3. Verse 3.

    ወየዓርግ፡ውእቱ፡ብእሲ፡ለለ፡መዋዕል፡እምነ፡ዘገሩ፡ከመ፡ይስግድ፡ወይሁዕ፡ለእግዚአብሔር፡ዘባእት፡በሴሎ፡ወህሉ፡ህየ፡ኤሊ፡ወይደቂቁ፡አስማቲሆሙ፡አፍኒ፡ወፊንሐስ፡ካህናቲሁ፡ለእግዚአብሔር።

    And that man would go up from year to year [lit. for each of the days] from his city to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of hosts at Shiloh; and there were there Eli and his sons, their names Hophni and Phinehas, priests of Yahweh.

  4. Verse 4.

    ወእምዝ፡በአሐቲ፡ዕለት፡ሦዓ፡ሕልቃና፡ወወሀዓ፡ለፍናና፡ብእሲቱ፡ወለኩሉ፡ደቂቃ፡ወአዋልዲሃ።

    And then on a certain day Elkanah sacrificed, and he gave [portions] to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters.

  5. Verse 5.

    ለሐናስ፡ወህበ፡እሐዱ፡ክፍለ፡እስመ፡አልባቲ፡ውሉድ፡ወባሕቱ፡የፈቅራ፡ሕልቃና፡ለሐና፡እምእንታ፡ክቲ፡ወዓፀወ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ማሕፀና።

    But to Hannah he gave one portion, because she had no children; yet Elkanah loved Hannah more than the other [wife], even though Yahweh had closed her womb.

  6. Verse 6.

    ወኢወህባ፡ውሉደ፡ብክመ፡ስቃይ፡ወንዘነ፡ልባ፡ወኢወህባ፡ውሉደ፡እስመ፡ዓፀወ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ማሕፀና።

    And he [Yahweh] did not give her a child, because of [her] grief, and her heart was sorrowful; and he did not give her a child, because Yahweh had closed her womb.

  7. Verse 7.

    ወከመዝ፡ይገብር፡ለለ፡ዓመት፡ወየዓርግ፡ውስተ፡ቤተ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ወይእቲስ፡ትቴክዝ፡ወትበኪ፡ወኢትበልዕ፡እክለ።

    And thus he did from year to year, and she would go up into the house of Yahweh; and she would be downcast and weep, and she would not eat food.

  8. Verse 8.

    ወይቤላ፡ምታ፡ሕልቃና፡አሐና፡ወትቤ፡ነየ፡አነ፡እግዚእየ፡ወይቤላ፡ምንት፡ኮንኪ፡ወምንት፡የበከየኪ፡ወልምንት፡አትበልዒ፡እክለ፡ወለምንት፡ትቀሥፊ፡ልበኪ፡ኢይኔይስኪኑ፡አነ፡እምውሉድ።

    And her husband Elkanah said to her, 'O Hannah,' and she said, 'Here I am, my lord.' And he said to her, 'What is the matter with you, and why do you weep, and why do you not eat food, and why does your heart grieve? Am I not better to you than children?'

  9. Verse 9.

    ወተንሥእት፡ሐና፡እምድኃሬ፡በልዑ፡ወስትዩ፡በሴሎም፡ወቆመት፡ቅድመ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ወኤሊስ፡ካህን፡ይነብር፡ዲበ፡መንበር፡ኃበ፡መድረክ፡ናሁት፡ዘቤተ፡እግዚአብሔር።

    And Hannah rose up after they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh; and she stood before Yahweh, while Eli the priest was sitting upon a seat by the doorpost of the temple of Yahweh.

  10. Verse 10.

    ወይእቲስ፡በመራር፡ነፍስ፡በከየት፡ወጸለየት፡ኃበ፡እግዚአብሔር።

    And she, in bitterness of soul, wept and prayed to Yahweh.

  11. Verse 11.

    ወትቤ፡በጻዕኩ፡ብዕናተ፡ለእግዚአብሔር፡አጾናይ፡ኃያል፡ለእመ፡ነጸር፡ነጸርክ፡ላዕለ፡ሕማማ፡ለአመትክ፡ወተዘክርክኒ፡ወህብክ፡ውሉድ፡ለአመትክ፡ወእሁቦ፡ቅድሜክ፡ህብተ፡እስራኤል፡ይመውት፡ወሐሢን፡ኢየዓርግ፡ዲበ፡ርእሱ።

    And she said, 'I have vowed a vow to Yahweh, Almighty, the Mighty One: if you indeed look upon the affliction of your handmaid and remember me, and give a child to your handmaid, then I will give him before you as a gift; he will not [drink wine or strong drink], and no razor will go up upon his head.'

  12. Verse 12.

    ወእምዝ፡ሶበ፡አሐለቀት፡ጸልዮ፡ቅድመ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ወኤሊስ፡ካህን፡ይትዓቀብ፡አፉሃ።

    And then, when she had finished praying before Yahweh, Eli the priest watched her mouth.

  13. Verse 13.

    ወሐናሰ፡ይእቲ፡ትነብብ፡በልባ፡ወተኃውስ፡ከናፍሪሃ፡ወቃላ፡ኢተሰምዐ፡ወአምስላ፡ኤሊ፡ከመ፡ስክርት።

    And Hannah was speaking in her heart, and her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; and Eli supposed her to be drunk.

  14. Verse 14.

    ወይቤላ፡ኤሊ፡እስከ፡ማእዜኑ፡ትስክሪ፡አስዕሊ፡ወይነ፡እምላዕሌኪ።

    And Eli said to her, 'How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from upon you.'

  15. Verse 15.

    ወተሠጥወቶ፡ሐና፡ወትቤ፡ኢኮንኩ፡እግዚእ፡ብእሲት፡እክቲ፡መዋዕለ፡ወይነ፡ወሜስ፡ኢስተይኩ፡ወእክዕዉ፡ለእነፍስየ፡ቅድመ፡እግዚአብሔር።

    And Hannah answered him and said, 'It is not so, my lord; I am a woman of [sorrowful] days, and wine and strong drink I have not drunk; and I was pouring out my soul before Yahweh.

  16. Verse 16.

    ኢትሬስዮ፡ለአመትክ፡አዋልድ፡ርኩሳት፡እስመ፡እምብዝኅ፡ወትካዝየ፡ተመሰኮ፡እስከ፡ይእዜ።

    Do not regard your handmaid as one of the unclean daughters, for it is out of the abundance of my grief that I have spoken until now.'

  17. Verse 17.

    ወይቤላ፡ኤሊ፡ወይቤላ፡ሐሪ፡በሰላም፡ወእምላክ፡እስራኤል፡የሀሉ፡ምስሌኪ፡ወየሀብኪ፡ስእለተ፡ኩሉ፡ዘስእልኪ፡እምኄሁ።

    And Eli answered her and said, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel be with you and grant you the petition of all that you have asked of him.'

  18. Verse 18.

    ወትቤሰ፡ሐና፡ትርከብ፡አሐ፡ግምግስ፡አመትክ፡በቅድሜክ፡ወሐረት፡ይእቲ፡ብእሲት፡ፍኖታ፡ወቦእት፡ቤታ፡ወበልዓት፡ምስለ፡ምታ፡ወስትየት፡ወኢያውደቀት።

    And Hannah said, 'May your handmaid find favor [grace] before you.' And the woman went on her way and entered her [dwelling], and ate with her husband and drank, and was no longer [downcast / fallen of face].

  19. Verse 19.

    ወጌሡ፡በጽባሕ፡ወስገዱ፡ቅድመ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ወተመይጡ፡ወቦኡ፡ውስተ፡አርማቴም፡ወእእመራ፡ሕልቃና፡ለሐና፡ብእሲቱ፡ወተዘክራ፡እግዚአብሔር።

    And they rose early in the morning and worshiped before Yahweh, and returned and came into Ramathaim; and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and Yahweh remembered her.

  20. Verse 20.

    ወኮነ፡እምዝ፡መዋዕል፡ጸንስት፡ሐና፡ወወለደት፡ወልደ፡ወሰመየት፡ስሞ፡ሳሙኤል፡እስመ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ስእልኩ።

    And it came to pass after those days that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, [saying], 'Because I asked him of Yahweh.'

  21. Verse 21.

    ወዓርገ፡ብእሲ፡ሕልቃና፡ወኩሉ፡ቤቱ፡ከመ፡ይሡዕ፡ለእግዚአብሔር፡መሥዋዕተ፡በመዋዕለ፡ወያሰፍሕ፡ጸሎቶ፡ወብፅዓቲሁ።

    And the man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to Yahweh a sacrifice in [its appointed] days, and to fulfill his prayer and his vows.

  22. Verse 22.

    ወሐናስ፡ኢዓርገት፡ምስሌሁ፡እስመ፡ትቤሎ፡ለምታ፡ኢየዓርግ፡እንስ፡እስከ፡አሐጥብ፡ሕፃን፡ወአበውእ፡ወአስተርእዮ፡ቅድመ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ወይነብር፡ህየ፡እስከ፡ለዓለም።

    But Hannah did not go up with him, for she said to her husband, 'I will not go up until the child is weaned, and [then] I will bring him and present him before Yahweh, and he will dwell there forever.'

  23. Verse 23.

    ወይቤላ፡ሕልቃና፡ብእሲሃ፡ግበሪ፡ዘከመ፡ሠናይ፡በቅድመ፡አዕይንትኪ፡ወንበሪ፡እስከ፡ሰህቅ፡ከመ፡የቅም፡እግዚአብሔር፡ነገሮ፡ወነበረት፡ይእቲ፡ብእሲት፡ወሐፀነት፡ወልዳ፡እስከ፡እመ፡አሳደገቶ፡ጥበ።

    And Elkanah her husband said to her, 'Do what is good in your eyes, and stay until you wean [him], that Yahweh may establish [the word he spoke].' And the woman stayed and nursed her son, until she had weaned him.

  24. Verse 24.

    ወዓርገት፡ምስሌሁ፡ወነሥአት፡እልህምት፡ወሐሪፀ፡ሥርግት፡ኢፋ፡ስርናየ፡ወጶመስፈርት፡ነገረ፡ወቦእት፡ቤተ፡እግዚአብሔር፡በሴሎ።

    And she went up with him, and took bullocks and an ephah of fine flour [for offering] and a [skin / measure of wine — text uncertain], and entered the house of Yahweh in Shiloh.

  25. Verse 25.

    ወሕፃንስ፡ንእስ፡ውእቱ፡ወጡብሐ፡እሎን፡ወአብእዊ፡ለሕፃን፡ኃበ፡ኤሊ።

    And the child was young; and they slaughtered the bullocks, and they brought the child to Eli.

  26. Verse 26.

    ወትቤ፡በሕያው፡ንፍስክ፡እግዚእየ፡አንቲ፡እንተ፡ቆምኩ፡ቅድሜክ።

    And she said, 'By the life of your soul, my lord, I am the woman who stood here before you.'

  27. Verse 27.

    ለለ፡ጸልዮ፡ኃበ፡እግዚአብሔር፡በእንተ፡ዝንቱ፡ሕፃን፡ጸለይኩ፡ወህበኒ፡እግዚአብሔር፡ስእለትየ፡ዘሰአልኩ፡እምኄሁ።

    [For] I prayed to Yahweh concerning this child, [and] Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.

  28. Verse 28.

    ወአነኒ፡አሁቦ፡ለእግዚአብሔር፡ኩሎ፡መዋዕለ፡ሕይወቱ፡ይሁ፡ለእግዚአብሔር።

    And as for me, I give him to Yahweh all the days of his life; he is dedicated [lent] to Yahweh.
